DEBATE COMPETITION – ENGLISH
DESCRIPTION:
Teams are presented with a 'resolution',
such as “Economic development should be valued above protection of the
environment” or “Human genetic engineering is immoral". Both sides are
given the opportunity to present their positions and to directly question the
opposing team. Neutral judges will evaluate the persuasiveness of the arguments
and offer constructive feedback on such elements as faulty logic, insufficient
evidence and arguments debaters may have overlooked. Debate teams will be
judged strictly on the merits of their arguments.
TYPE: Team (2 members per team)
RULES:
Each team will comprise of 2 members, one
of which will have to speak for the topic and one against! There will be three
rounds in total. The description of the rounds are as follows:
1. Round 1: This will be a screening round which will be through GD
(Group Discussion). Teams will be given a topic at random and they will have to
speak either in favor or against! This will be strictly for judging the content
that everyone can put in and the ability to strongly voice out your opinion!
2. Round 2: Top 10 teams# from the previous round will move to
this round. This will be a normal debate round, rebuttal will be allowed in
this round! The rebuttal in this round will be done by the opponent teams
solely! If any unnecessary question is asked, that may be ruled out by the
judges without any clarification! Rebuttal is an essential element of debating – it provides
the “clash of ideas” that makes debating different from public speaking.
3. Round 3: Top 4 teams from Round 2 will move in to this
round. This will also be a normal debating round like Round 2 but in this round
Judges can also take part in the rebuttal!
Note: Each team member will get 3-4
minutes to express their views on the topic! Exceeding the time limit will
result in negative marking! There will be three bells given, one for the start
of time, one for the end of time and the last one will signify that you have
taken 30 seconds over your time.
